Queensland Rail Case Update

Last Saturday, the people of Queensland delivered their verdict on the Qld Governmentís programme of asset sales and unfair IR laws. The result was both remarkable and historic. Never before has a first term government been so severely rebuked.

What it means for members in QR is that a large shadow has been cast over the arbitration of the current agreement which may have seen the removal of important conditions of employment. At the very least it would have created a long period of uncertainty.

In anticipation of QR having owners more prepared to deal positively with the RTBU we have sought that the QIRC put the case on hold until the new government is sworn in. They have agreed and we have instructed the lawyers to make approaches to the Commission.

While we wait for the results of the election to be finalised it is good to know that regardless of the outcome the known majority of members of parliament elected are opposed to asset sales.

Itís important to note that the sale of QR is now off the cards, but so too is the privatisation of the North West track which was of great concern to many members.

We will keep you updated on developments.
