ARTC Plans Rejected

Members may be aware that the previous LNP Government along with the Abbott Government were exploring the transfer of the QR network (infrastructure and train control) to the federal body, ARTC. This was with the exception of the corridor between Mt Isa and Townsville which the LNP intended to privatise.

It appears that a report was provided to the Queensland Government in respect of this in October last year and this has now been responded to by the Queensland Deputy Premier and Transport Minister, Jackie Trad. The Federal Government has been advised that the Queensland Government has decided not to proceed with the transfer of the QR network to ARTC.

Members will also be aware that prior and subsequent to the election, the Palaszczuk Government made it clear that the Mt Isa to Townsville corridor will not be privatised.

This therefore means that all of the current QR Network will remain in Queensland Government’s hands for the foreseeable future. This decision certainly removes the uncertainty and threat to job security that many members in this area were experiencing.
